Postdoctoral Fellow in AI for Cardiovascular Imaging (Holste Lab)

The Department of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow under the supervision of Dr. Gregory Holste (https://www.gholste.me/). Applications submitted by February 1, 2027, will receive full consideration.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will lead projects on building clinically translatable AI for echocardiography interpretation. Directions include foundation models for echocardiography, multimodal integration of cardiac ultrasound with other cardiovascular imaging (CT, MRI) and clinical signals (ECG, EHR, reports), and rigorous validation that moves models toward clinical use. The work is interdisciplinary, in close collaboration with cardiologists, sonographers, and other clinicians and researchers across Weill Cornell Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian, and beyond. No prior cardiology experience is required—as an early member of this new lab, you will help shape its research directions.

Example responsibilities include the following:

  • Leading the design, development, and evaluation of deep learning models for echocardiography using large-scale, real-world clinical data.
  • Developing self-supervised, foundation, and multimodal models that integrate echocardiography with other imaging modalities and clinical data.
  • Designing evaluations that support clinical translation: external and multi-site validation, subgroup and fairness analyses, and potential prospective deployment studies.
  • Building reproducible pipelines for curating and processing DICOM and clinical data in compliance with IRB, HIPAA, and institutional policies.
  • Working with clinical collaborators to define clinically meaningful problems and interpret results.
  • Publishing in leading AI conferences and/or health-related journals, presenting at scientific meetings, and releasing open-source code and models where possible.
  • Pursuing independent funding appropriate for early-career investigators.
  • Participating in departmental and interdisciplinary seminars, workshops, and meetings with labs spanning the Departments of Population Health Sciences, Radiology, and Medicine (Cardiology).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields. Applicants with an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. with equivalent technical depth, such as first-author methods publications, will be considered.
  • Demonstrated expertise in deep learning and computer vision, shown through first-author publications or substantial open-source work.
  • Proficiency in Python and at least one modern deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX).
  • Experience training deep learning models at scale on shared multi-GPU clusters.
  • Strong interdisciplinary communication skills and a willingness to immerse oneself in the details of a real-world clinical problem.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with biomedical imaging or medical applications of AI, especially in ultrasound and/or cardiology (echocardiography, ECG, cardiac CT/MR).
  • Experience working with large amounts of raw clinical data (DICOM, EHR).
  • Publications in leading AI venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV), medical imaging and health AI venues (e.g., MICCAI, MIDL, Medical Image Analysis), and/or high-impact clinical journals.
  • Experience with self-supervised learning, foundation models, video or spatiotemporal modeling, or multimodal and vision-language models.
  • Experience securing individual fellowships, travel awards, and other funding.

Application Process:

Apply through this form: https://forms.gle/63VqeabSVtWkrmEq9. The form requests personal information, CV, links to key papers, and two references.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview and give a research talk.

If you cannot complete the Google Form, or have questions, email Dr. Holste at grh4006@med.cornell.edu with the subject “Echo AI Postdoc Applicant”.
