This is an ophthalmic, ultrasound-focused research position funded by an NIH/NEI grant supporting researchers in the Department of Radiology of Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) in New York City. The successful candidate will work closely with internationally recognized investigators at WCM, VMR Institute (California), Quantel Medical (France) and Columbia University Medical Center (New York) The goal of your research will be to help develop a new quantitative ultrasound technology integrated in a commercial ophthalmic ultrasound platform to assess vitreous inhomogeneity as it relates to states of health and disease. Such a tool would assist in developing less invasive and affordable treatments for early intervention, such as pharmacologic vitreolysis or laser therapy.
Daily responsibilities of the candidate include:
• Create test protocols for collecting ultrasound data from volunteer participants in the clinic studies.
• Manage and organize clinical data acquired by partner institutions.
• Develop custom code for analyzing ultrasound data in your choice of software (MATLAB/Python/R/etc.). The analyses range from segmentation of ophthalmic components, quantitative analysis of vitreous backscatter and statistical analysis of disease versus non disease patients.
• Assemble and organize a data base of clinical data and oversee analysis of the data as it relates to the clinical goals of the research program.
• Establish test protocols with clinical ultrasound machine, train clinical collaborators on feature and protocols use and manage data collection and transfer.
• Become familiar with the anatomy of the eye and the characteristics of the vitreous in health and diseases such as myopia.
• Prepare data visualizations and perform statistical analyses for conference presentations and journal articles.
• Communicate and coordinate with research team based in California, New York, and France.
• Attend weekly meetings with the PIs and record participate in the progress of the project on multiple fronts.
• Earned a recent or soon to earn a doctorate in mechanical, electrical, biomedical engineering or related relevant field.
• Experience with ultrasound imaging systems and technology strongly desired.
• Proficiency with signal and image processing methods as they relate to ultrasound data processing and quantitative ultrasound approaches.
• Able to undertake benchtop ultrasound experiments to acquire backscatter ultrasound data.
• Productive publication record. • Experience presenting results at international scientific conferences.
• Programming skills in MATLAB related to ultrasound data processing. Other Attributes
• US citizenship or current U.S. immigration visa permitting this employment.
• Familiarity with modern statistical techniques including linear mixed model analysis, machine learning and other large data analytical techniques.
• Experience developing ultrasound instrumentation.
• Programming experimental acquisition systems using LabVIEW or MATLAB.
• Fabrication of mechanical and electrical parts as relevant to developing experimental system.
• Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with a multi-disciplinary research team.
• 1-2 year initial appointment with potential for additional years.
