Postdoc stipends vary signifcantly accross the U.S. That was one of the conclusions by Gary McDowell of Future of Research from a recent survey of postdoc stipends. From his data that Dr. McDowell found that ~80% of postdoc stipends ranged from $40k to $60K while the remainder ranged from as low as $30 and the lucky few earned over $70k. Chris Woolston of Nature provides his opinion on this disparity.
